English Deciding Factor in Success of Office Workers in KOREA

English-language skills have become the determining factor for the success of office workers, with many companies considering English test scores an important criterion for promotion and favoring conversation skills over standardized tests like the TOEIC and TOEFL.

More and more firms use English for their intranet boards, meetings and reports. One 35-year-old deputy director at an IT company said, “The reality is that even divisions where English is not needed for work have to speak it. When there are restructuring plans, rumors spread that those who can’t speak English are most likely to get laid off.”

According to a survey by job portal Job Korea in January of 2,042 salaried workers about their regrets in the recession, 27.2 percent picked poor English skills, 25.1 percent chose lack of professional skills or licenses, and 15.3 percent answered lacking a degree from prestigious university.

Among students at English-language schools around the business district in Gangnam, Seoul, office workers have a significant presence. “The English component in reviews for promotion was changed from a TOEIC score to conversation skills. I score fairly well on the TOEIC thanks to the vocabulary I learned at university, but there is no better option to improve my English conversation skill. That’s why I come here early in the morning,” one said.

Lunchtime classes at a school are packed with office workers. A staffer said, “Unlike university students who tend to give up one or two months after taking classes, more than half of these employee students take classes for more than a year. That shows how desperate they are.”

The English divide deepens when it comes to recruitment of fresh graduates. Average English proficiency is not enough in a generation where many have been educated abroad or gone through intensive courses from an early age, a human resources manager at Shinsegae Group said.

A 27-year-old jobseeker added, “It seems that Korea is going the same way as India, where totally different jobs are available for those who can speak English and those who can’t.”

REACTION:

As you can see in the picture above, the office workers are studying English through class discussions. Where the teacher most probably the one talking most of the time as always the case with this kind of set up. This kind of studying scheme if your goal is to become fluent in speaking is not good. There is a saying," If you want to write...write a lot, if you want to speak...speak a lot." But, pity for a lot of Language learners doesn't really know and couldn't find the best method matches their need. As I read in one language book, the author said, " Why are you focusing on grammar learning. Do you want to become a grammarian?" In other words, grammar learning is not the key to learning how to speak fluently.

And as the article above stated: " more than half of these employee students take classes for more than a year. That shows how desperate they are.”

Huh! "more than a year"? Granting the fact that they learned English since high school, so more than 7 years of studying English. Wow! That is really a colossal amount of time and effort besides money. And yet, perhaps if you are going to interview some of them, they are still not satisfied nor can't speak fluent English. Where if they will try other method of studying like what I'm using in teaching Koreans... oh, within less than a year they could feel the difference.

Number one tip and my requirement in learning a language to adult is be like a child. As I learned from different Linguist like Chomsky, according to him, " a child could not possibly learn a language through imitation alone." While according to David Crystal's theory that children learn language in five stages, which aren’t clearly defined and some tie in with each other.

These stages are:

Stage One:

This is where children say things for three purposes:

To get something they want
To get someone’s attention
To draw attention to something

"Over three or four years, children master the grammar of the language. When they attend their first school year."

According to Jean Aitchison a Rupert Murdoch Professor of Language and Communication in the Faculty of English Language and Literature at the University of Oxford.

In 1987, she identified three stages that occur during a child’s acquisition of vocabulary: labeling, packaging and network building.

1. Labeling – The first stage and involves making the link between the sounds of particular words and the objects to which they refer e.g. understanding that “mummy” refers to the child’s mother. In other words, associating a name with something.

2. Packaging – This entails understanding a word’s range of meaning. This is when Over extension and Under extension become a hurdle in the development of the language.

3. Network Building – This involves grasping the connections between words; understanding that some words are opposite in meaning.Aitchison argued that there are no EXACT dates to which a child reaches a certain stage of learning language – some children learn faster than others. She believed that the speed of learning is influenced by both innate abilities and environment. Language is partly learned by imitation, so parents and brothers/sisters play a role in the acceleration of learning the language. Baby talk whilst learning to speak could hinder the child in learning to speak later on. Speech timetablecreated from birth to ten years old.

Now, did you get it? To sum it up... children learn to speak by schedule, not only by imitation but rather exposure to the language several times over and over again by talking to their mother without grammar lessons yet. And when they reaches their first grade in school when they can say what they want and feel, that is the time they learn grammar.

CELEBRATOR or CELEBRANT?

I'm supposed to have session with my Korean Phd. Computer Engineer tonight at 10:00pm Philippine time and 11:00pm Korean time but he asked me to amend it next week because he is going to Seoul.
Since that I'm already in front of the computer so I decided to just check my email, yahoo and face book to kill one 1/2 hour before resting. Then, it caught my attention with the exchanging of messages between my niece and her teacher that said:

Now I’m mentioning all this to you, because last week the party host in the birthday party I was performing at kept referring to the birthday boy as “the birthday ...celebrator.” One or two members of the audience were smirking at the term. The reason? To most Filipinos, celebrator is a pretentious word. It has a ring of artificiality in it.

Which shouldn’t be the case, because celebrator is a correct term. The only reason that prompted the smirk, I think, is that celebrator is not often used in the Philippines in ordinary occasions. The usual word is celebrant.

So now, if you are a magician in the Philippines, who is not a native English speaker, you may want to know which is the correct term to use? Birthday “celebrator” or birthday “celebrant“?

The answer favors neither. According to Dictionary.com, both terms are correct. They are in fact synonyms. They both mean “a participant in any celebration.” One can be used for the other, and it would mean the same thing.

However, celebrant also connotes “the officiating priest in the celebration of the Eucharist.” Methinks this connotation is what prompted well-meaning English professors and word mavens in the Philippines to preach that the correct term is celebrator.

Well, it may be the more correct term as far as nuance is concerned, but its sound grates the ears of ordinary citizens in the Philippines who are not used to hearing it, let alone using it.

That being the case, my advice is for you to use the more common word “celebrant.” It is still correct usage, and it is soothing to the ears of audiences in the Philippines.

celebrator - someone who celebrates. "Is the priest the birthday celebrator?

In both formal and informal usage, both words can be interchanged.

Are you a Tactile/Kinesthetic Learner?
Know your preferred learning style.

Then, do you have lots of time to study in front of a computer? And last, do you have financial capacity to spend for Rosetta Stone or Pinsleur?

Why are you going to spend so much with those programs since there are lots of various language learning program in video, audio, printed lessons etc. for FREE! Just be patient surfing the net to look which is interesting and enjoyable.

If you are a busy person you can't use ROSSETA language software programs when you are driving, walking, riding or while removing your doo doo.

While through MP4 or tapes or printed materials, flash cards your learning will be flexible. Though, Pinsleur 's is audio but the disadvantage is that there is no printed or visual materials but only audio. Therefore, it will not fully help you if you are a visual learner.

Better to spend your money to look for a personal tutor or go to the country of your target language.

TEACHER GIE's VISIT TO SOUTH KOREA

Last April 28th, my previous tutor in the Philippines visited Korea. She had stayed for 10 days, until May 9th. She was my tutor when I was in the Philippines as an exchange student in 2008.
I couldn't believe she can come to Korea to meet me, as well as her other students. Since she is a host in UNTV channel, she also had to shoot Korean cultures and sceneries. She stayed in Seoul for few days. I got a day-off on a Friday, and I visited Seoul to see her. She had to participate in an interview at the Philippine embassy, near Noksapyung station.

To meet her, I got up early on Friday morning, I ran to Daejeon Station to take a train to Seoul. However, I was late, the train had passed by in front of me. I couldn't get on. I couldn't but to buy a ticket for the next train to Seoul. After having hard time to travel to Seoul, finally, I met teacher Gie, with her colleagues. It had been almost 2 years since we last saw in the Philippines. It was really nice to see her.

The people who were with T.Gie were taking a video for her program. I was also in there, as a tour-guide. They told me I would be on TV too. We walked to, "The war memorial museum of Korea". It was my first time to see it. In front of the museum, on a big square ground, there were some armies marching. Every Friday 2pm, they are having a big march. When we were there, they were practicing in preparation to the performance. After watching it, we went inside. It was open to everybody for free. There were many memorial things such as: old weapons, clothes, name tags and miniatures describing some Korean wars. I saw, "Turtle ship" model. It was awesome. Though I had no much knowledge about Korean history, I tried to explain some exhibitions to the Philippines. We had lunch after touring inside museum.

After that, we visited Citi bank to change my bankbook.
The bank where we went was the headquarters ( main branch) of "Citi bank ", so it was very big and high. We rode an elevator and went up to almost 20th floor.
T. Gie wanted to open a saving account in the bank, but she couldn't.

Anyway T.gie and I went out and took a taxi to go to Nam san Tower. The taxi driver took us to the terminal of cable car. We bought two round tickets for the cable car. Finally, we went up to the tower and met other fellows. All together we went up to the observatory. With the telescope in the observatory, we observed the whole city; Seoul. They all liked it.

While we are resting, James contacted me, who was an exchange student in the Philippines with me. He was told T.gie came to Korea, so he is coming to see us. We met him at Seoul station, and went to Shinchon, near Leehwa women's university. And for having dinner, we went to a restaurant serving shabu shabu noodle. We had a great time having dinner. After dinner, we separated, James went his place to his friends, I went to my friend's house and T.gie together with Rustan went to theirs.

The next day, I was at the Children's grand park with my friend. Since it was really sunny day and the place was near her house, we couldn't help going there. We took a lot of pictures in front of flowers, a big fountain, and other good places with various themes. My friend treated me late lunch at the Outback. We were full after eating the delicious foods: spaghetti and salad.

Afterwards, I was supposed to meet my sister, Christine; to meet T.gie in Uijeongbu. We met at Namdaemoon, the South gate and got on a subway, line number 1. It took us there about 40 minutes to go to Uijeonbu station. Some guys welcomed us and took us to their place. There were some more Filipinos . We greeted and had dinner together. T.gie, Christine, and I went to a motel to spend the night. We had some conversations and got tired, so we fell asleep. The place we were staying was little bit dry, so we had difficulties sleeping.

On Sunday, the next day, we had shooting with VANK members. Actually, I didn’t know what VANK is. There were around 8 Koreans who were acting as VANK members. They were only high school students, but they were really good at English. And it made me surprised and proud. But it also made me downcast because I thought they are better than me regarding English speaking skills though, I’m working in Hagwan as an English teacher.

I was interviewed about my experiences in the Philippines last 2008, . But I didn’t organize my thought so I regret little bit. Anyway, it was good experience in the Philippines. When I was there, I met T.gie who is caring for me like my real mom.

We had great time in Seoul, and we went to Dondaemoon, the East gate, to buy some clothes for Christine. Because she will be shooting with a very feminine clothes in a music video. It took about 4 hours to choose to fit the concept for the music video. I got very tired and it was time to come back home. So I just took out my hamburger set from the Lotetteria. I brought it KTX and ate while I was traveling to Daejeon.

Staying in Seoul was very tiring, but it was really good to meet many people, especially, T. gie, in Korea. I hope she’ll come back to Korea again with God's blessing.

“English indeed continues to penetrate the Filipino society”...

It is also confirmed when Andrew Gonzales of De La Salle stated in his writing Language Planning in Multilingual Countries: The Case of the Philippines, the policy and reality do not match. English continues to dominate government and business transactions at the highest levels as well as international communications and education, especially science and mathematics classes, at all levels and all subjects at university level.

Also Gavin Hughes wrote the Preserve the Native Languages of the Philippines not only is the current policy destroying the cultural heritage of the Philippines, it also makes no economic sense. Speaking Tagalog fluently does not ensure work or even education opportunities. With Tagalog but no English, one cannot attend university. But with English alone, all university doors are open. It is skill in English that increases employability, both in the Philippines and abroad. Instead of focusing on Tagalog, students need to focus on their own native languages and English.
While according to Manuel Faelnar ( a Palanca Awardee for Literature) The Philippine National Language Policy is killing our non-Tagalog languages. While in 1948 only 18% of Filipinos spoke Tagalog as a first language, by 1995 this had gone up to 29.29% or one third of the population. On the other hand, while in 1948, 25% of Flipinos spoke Cebuano, by 1995 this had gone down to 21.17%. In 1948 13% of Filipinos spoke Ilocano and another 13% spoke Ilonggo. By 1995 the percentage of Filipinos speaking these two languages had gone down to 9.31% and 9.1%% respectively.

In 1948, Bicol was spoken by 8% of the population. By 1995 this was down to 5.69%. Waray was spoken by 6% of Filipinos in 1948. By 1995 only 3.81% of Flipinos spoke Waray. Pampangan or Kapampangan was spoken by 3% of Filipinos in 1948. By 1995 this had gone down to 2.9%. Pangasinense suffered the biggest loss. in 1948, 3% of Filipinos spoke Pangasinense. By 1995 this had gone down to a miserable 1%. The biggest lose of speakers were for Waray, Bicol and Pangasinense but all non-Tagalog languages suffered tremensdous losses.

In my point of view, I think having 120 different dialects and languages in the Philippines illustrate how providential we are to other countries. Because first, difficult to learn dialects could be a vital tool for codes during emergencies like the Navaho during the World War II. And second, those words in other dialect or languages that are easy to learn could use for scientific terms or trade as what I read about Dr. Dacudao of SOLFED, Inc. writing where he cited these two practical reasons for preserving the diversity of Philippine languages.

I also read about the longitudinal studies being conducted by Diane and Greg Dekker, and Dr. Stephen L. Walter, under the auspices of SIL International and the Philippine Department of Education, in Lubuagan, Kalinga, Philippines are showing that children being educated using their mother tongue first are out-performing students being educated in Filipino-first and English-first, by a difference of 40 percentage points. Philippine educators, the Department of Education, and other policy makers are taking time to familiarize themselves with mother toungue-first multilingual education, and are examining whether the time is right for a change in Philippine education policy.

Therefore, it is imperative that the government just focus on how all dialects and languages in the Philippines will thrive and not disappear by appealing and creating a lucid policy thus making our country a multilingual republic. So that our students may now focus on using their own native languages as according to study that a the child using their own native language understands- enables to immediately master curriculum content, and not only that but, affirms the value of the child, cultural and language heritage.

But, how could this be viable where our very own head leader of our country is not supporting these views but instead refute? She- president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has once again highlighted the importance of English in the issue of Executive Order 210, an order establishing the policy to strengthen the use of English as the language of instruction as she deemed it necessary “to develop the aptitude, competence and proficiency of our students in the English language to maintain and improve their competitive edge in emerging and fast-growing local and international industries, particularly in the area of Information and Communications Technology”.
No wonder why a lot of new generations now are more preferred to use in expressions of surprise and intimacy and about nostalgic moments are wanted to be in English but are currently in Tagalog. The language preferred in the wider community is also English, moving from Tagalog. The students were not hesitant to admit that Taglish dominates the school – amidst the implementing policies – but they would like to adhere to the policy still and use English. A shift to English is also wanted when communicating with co-workers, when it is also currently done in Taglish. English remains to be the most common language used and also as the language preferred in the media (radio, television, and newspaper), popular literature (magazines and comics), and books; while praying, in telling time; and when giving interest rates and writing technical reports. The retainment of English is also preferred at work, at work when speaking with one’s superior, and during marketing transactions. Tagalog is the most common language used at present and also the language preferred at home, when talking about confidential family matters and contacting absent family members, and in the neighborhood and the wider community. Taglish is the language currently used and also the preferred language when conversing among peers. There is preference for Tagalog when shopping, though Taglish is currently in use and still follows Tagalog in the same verbal activity.

THE BIRTH OF GRAMMAR

"Of all the areas investigated by developmental psycholinguists, the acquisition of grammar has been studied the must intesive. Much of this can be related to the development of transformational - generative (TG) grammar, the most influential school of linguistics to affect the study of language over the past four decades. It has always been involved most centrally with the study of sentences."

1) A dictionary has many thousands of words but not just any words can be put together to make a sentence.

2) Grammar must still be our concern, especially because English is not our native language. If we are not going to take it seriously, there will always be something missing.

3) On of the example why rules in sentences / paragraphs were invented because of the following sample lines:

Ancient Greek writers saw the difficulty of reading this kind of line...So, about twenty five hundred years ago, they began to place a short line under or beside the words in a sentence that began a new topic or idea. They called this line paragraphos, which means " writing beside".

" Finally, it is quite rare for youngsters to repeat the same word twice in forming their little sentences; children are parsimonious with their language and make each word count." ( pg.15 - SURVEY ACQUISITION)

In my opinion, " parsimonious", is a wrong choice of word. Because, if we are going to look the meaning of the word in the dictionary it doesn't match. Children are not parsimonous with their language but rather they are just restricted/bounded with words or phrases due to lack of exposure.

WE LEARN TO SPEAK A SECOND LANGUAGE

Language is always changing. It changes from century to century, from day to day, from person to person, from place to place. Like a flowing river, language is never quite the same today as it was yesterday.

Same with learning the second language, there are many alternatives-theories, teaching methods, different learners, different environments different teachers, different gadgets etc. In addition to what Ellis suggests that of the second language – attitude, motivation, learning strategy and personality.
These factors too, are the proofs why a child could learn the second language compares to adult. A child will not argue nor debate his/her English teacher in regards to grammar things nor translate from Language 1 to Language 2. They just look, listen and repeat.
Input from the teachers sets the wheels in motion rather than creating the wheels of language. Finding topics of conversation that can be mutually understood, speaking at a slow pace, repeating important phrases, stressing the key words in a sentence will keep the input factor in second language.
In my case, during session hours – per hour, I made him/her (student) to answer more than 100 questions…per topic conversation, at least 10 to 30 questions, not to mention the remaining hour for listening and reading to complete the two hour sessions.

Gardner and Lambert originally considered that integrative motivation was more powerful in language learning than instrumental motivation.
In my opinion, I disagree on their consideration saying that integrative motivation is more powerful. Because, here in the Philippines learners most priority is to get a job and have sturdy future. And call center agent, English teacher and workers that could speak English well get the most chance of securing an opportunity either local or abroad; “Money makes the world go round”, now a days and not to find their roots or form friendship (as in integrative motivation).

So, I am a freelance English tutor for foreigners specially Koreans ON LINE / one-on-one and I am involve http://www.untvweb.com. as talent. For more than 2 years of teaching them…I would say that there are few who are rude but most of them that I handled are very nice. As a matter of fact, few of them treated and call me 2nd mommy or lovely teacher. We should first entrench why they behave like that. Perhaps, because of ignorance, stress, immaturity or precipitate reaction. It happens too to some of us. So why not, take a broader view. Korea is just small like other Asian countries, wise and there are lots of them who are wonderful like my Korean classmate, students and their family. kkkkkkk

C’mon you can not invalidate this persons opinion any more than I can validate yours, and you can only guess what race they are even if it did matter. It is to the individual to reveal their race if they care to. Personally I don’t see what it matters what race this person is anyway. ANSWERS:First of all, Koreans are NOT RACISTS.Some old people might act with a sense of racism, however that is not out of bad intentions;they're just unfamiliar with foreigners. I have also experienced rude attitudes or staringswhen I was in US, Europe, etc., so I believe that is something the young people must endure.Secondly, it is just unbelievable that Korean students are considered to be the worst among many other Asian countries! As a Korean student myself, I have met a lot of teachers from overseas, and all of them were like " wow, Korean students are so passionate, enthusiastic, and do their bests on studying." Maybe some students might be rather unpassionate about their work, but every country has such students. One study conducted by Seoul National University claimed that chickens infected with the H5N1 virus, also called avian flu, recovered after eating food containing the same bacteria found in kimchi. Hello, I'm Seeun.

Each of the paragraph are responses to the number mentioned above ( QUESTION AND ANSWERS: Part I ) . And because these are just my opinions, I'm not sure if I'm right or wrong. Again, this is subjective not objective.

1. Koreans are not racists. Well, it could be possible that some native speakers might think Koreans are racists. But, this isn't true.

Korea attracted the world's attention mostly from about thirty years ago due to its rapid economic development and in other words a lot of Koreans also began to have chances to meet and to experience the new things and new people. That's why young generations are familiar with international matters but not many of the old generations are familiar with exoticism. However, it doesn't mean that elders are racists. So I hope you don't get the wrong idea from this.

2. I'm a Korean student and to be honest I have no clue why native speakers stated that Korean students are the worst. I'm right now living in Korea but I had lived in the states for two years too. Seen from my experience, I think Korean students can be divided into two groups:

1)students who are very eager to learn and study and

2)students who are not interested in studying and just do their work without any purpose because their teachers or parents told them to do so.

Aren't the students the same in other countries too? And... if the fact Korean students are the worst is true, I, a Korean student, would not even put my effort to fix the wrong conception that other eople have for the Korean students. Because I don't know on what standards the native speakers considered Korean managers to be the worst, I cannot respond to this question properly. However, if the manager put someone as a replace on the phone, I think there might be three options to think of: 1) the caller did not call the one whom he or she wanted to speak to and that's why the manager connected the caller to the 'right' manager, 2) the manger is in meeting, and 3) the manager does not want to work at all. (if the native speakers are mentioning about type 3 manager, whoever the manager is, he or she has to be fired in my opinion)

3. I think I little bit understanding why the native speakers would think in that way. Imagine that you have a lot of people around you in a foreign country but you don't actually have a person who can really share your emotion or feeling with. Different culture might lead the native speakers to think that Koreans are reluctant to make foreign friends but this isn't true. When I was in the states, I also had the fear that I might not make any friends in the states because I couldn't speak English, experiencing different culture seemed to be very scarry, and it was the first time for me to be alone among a lot of foreigners. But after I decided to learn American's culture and hang out with people who could understand me and whom I could understand, everything was gradually changing. So I think because of this kind of fear, a lot of Koreans in other countries are struggling to make friendship with the native speakers. But once they open their mind, I'm sure things are going to be changed. Not only Koreans, I guess a lot of cosmopolitans also have the same problem when they're in a foreign country because even in Korea I see a lot of foreigners in Korea seem to encounter with this problem too.

4. I think I mentioned about this on number two. Therefore, I will not state again.

5. I'm not sure what kind of business ethics they are talking about. But thinking of some moral things related with business, some points might seem to be very strange to foreigners. In Korea, when you fill up your application form, basically you need to give every detail information to a firm. So taking one example, you have to attach your photo or picture on the application form so that the juries or people who select the workers of a firm know how you look. I've heard that this is very segregated and very unfair to foreigners' thoughts. And I too, think that this isn't a good system to conduct for the preparatory workers. However, unfortunately you need to attach your photo if you want to work in Korea because most of the companies conduct this system. And in the company, there are more male workers than female workers as far as I know because women have to manage housechore and company work simultaneously. However this trend is now becoming old fashioned and firms are now trying to select many female workers too. Besides, these facts I personally think that overall business ethics are good and Korea tries to support one of the best business ethics as the world is globalized.

6. I don't know on what standards the English teachers use word 'polite' and 'understanding.' And since I'm Korean not Japanese I don't know if Japanese people are the most polite and understanding when taking English classes. I guess it just depends on the students the teachers had.

P.S. I think it could be possible that some native speakers might describe Koreans in somewhat a negative way. As you know,nothing can be perfect in this world. However, I can definitely say that most Koreans are very kind and humane because they are the ones who love to share what's so called '정情'-'human affection.' Hi, I read your blog and found it quite interesting. My name is Diane, and I'm currently not in korea- I'm studying biology in a Canadian university named Queen's. I don't completely disagree with what you've said-( by: JJ) about how Koreans are racist and such. However, I think that it's not just about Koreans because there are many kinds of people out there in the world. Being out here in America since middle school have given me many opportunities to meet various kinds of people and share many experiences with them. In America, even though everyone's supposed to 'tolerate' differences between one another, I've met many people who were racists- and they were not Koreans- surprise~! Also, even when working or volunteering, I found many people frustrating to work with because they were unethical, selfish, or lack sensitivity toward others...see, what I'm trying to say is the issues you talked about is not just about 'koreans'. it's about people in general. I think it's not logical to say that koreans are not ethical in general and such- how would they be working abroad and be successful if their nature was unethical? People from other countries wouldn't work with them or even face them!I think it's about individual differences and how mature they are. From your ( by: JJ) passage, I could see how ( he) you were frustrated with your work experience in korea with some nasty koreans. I guess they weren't treating you right. Geraldine A. “gigi” Herrera is a licensed teacher, graduate of Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education major in PEHM and took masters in Language Education (hope to finish her thesis writing). She also studied graphology and Chinese Physiognomy.
The producer, director, writer, host of Maestra Viajes, one of the pioneer program in UNTV that aired for more than 4 years from 2004 to 2008. It was supported by the National Historical Institute, local/provincial Tourism department and received financial grant from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts in 2006. Received two category awards: Grand Prize & Early Bird Award in a documentary contest- “KONEK BULACAN” 2006- Title of Entry: DUGONG DALISAY SA IYO AY ALAY (Blood Center).

She produced her own television program (Maestra Viejes) for children that will allow her to apply all her experience, training and expertise as a theater and television artist. Before she took her degree course she is already a professional theater artist, directing and appearing in television dramas. She started in theater 1987 and was trained in the different facets of theater production from acting, directing, make-up, props, marketing, stage management including voice culture and dubbing with different Manila and provincial theater groups. She also granted a voice culture scholarship at Heritage Art Center 1991, attended workshops for photography, painting lesson, and attended workshop for directing at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

She made more that 100 stage performances with different theater group in Manila and provinces aside from television appearances, documentaries and commercials. She handles musical play directing, music video productions, audio visual presentations and concerts. She also conducts theater and television workshops in different venues. Likewise she did some hosting projects or voice over in different events, concert and production projects. She enjoyed interacting with famous film and TV directors she work with, honing her directing skills more than acting and production works.

Aside from Theater and Television work, she manages her own Tutorial and Workshop Center in Bulacan where she is coaching acting, voice technique and literary contest (declamation, poetry, speech, etc.) At the moment, she is involve in tutoring different nationalities like Koreans and Muslim, English ON LINE and one to one. (She is also a freelance tour guide to local and foreign visitors particularly French speaking in Bulacan.)

She is very grateful and thankful to God for the new project and opportunity given to her by the UNTV management and KNC SHOW (KAWAN NG KURDERO) as one of the main host in the segment " BIBLE STORY". The children show were she is also part of the original production team that started in 2004.

1) As the linguists said, the difference between a mistake and an error…mistakes if you’re conscious of them and can correct them. They would be errors, however, if you’re not even aware that they are and if they’re pervasive.

And if I’m determined and work hard at it, perhaps there will be a big chance for me/anybody to be a master of formal Standard English: grammar, spelling, idioms, exact word choice or mistakes and errors will be diminished.

2) Age – one of the sources of error…Teaching the older adult confers some challenges, although none are insurmountable. Older adult usually needs more time to learn.
Teaching my older client (56 years old) I always making sure to face him while speaking; clearly, slowly and loudly if necessary, while avoiding shouting.

3) Mistake also could be done by a person who is vague like in 1544 when De Soto first called an animal kind a buffalo; he didn’t know that he was looking at an American bison. Mistake or not, the term buffalo is still in use four centuries later.

4) Another word that came into English by way of a more celebrated mistake is Indian. When Columbus first reached the New World, he thought he was somewhere in the Indies of Asia. He gave the name West Indies to the group of Caribbean islands which he discovered on his first voyage. He called the inhabitants of these islands Indians. This word is still in use today although it is being replaced in the United States by the more accurate term Native American.

5) Fossilization - At one time in the history of our language, the word sue did mean “to follow”. Now it’s most common meaning is “to seek justice in court”.

1) Language is always changing. It changes from century to century, from day to day, from person to person, from place to place. Like a flowing river, language is never quite the same today as it was yesterday.

Same with learning the second language, there are many alternatives-theories, teaching methods, different learners, different environments different teachers, different gadgets etc. In addition to what Ellis suggests that of the second language – attitude, motivation, learning strategy and personality.

These factors too, are the proofs why a child could learn the second language compares to adult. A child will not argue nor debate his/her English teacher in regards to grammar things nor translate from Language 1 to Language 2. They just look, listen and repeat.

2) Input from the teachers sets the wheels in motion rather than creating the wheels of language. Finding topics of conversation that can be mutually understood, speaking at a slow pace, repeating important phrases, stressing the key words in a sentence will keep the input factor in second language.

In my case, during session hours – per hour, I made him/her (student) to answer more than 100 questions…per topic conversation, at least 10 to 30 questions, not to mention the remaining hour for listening and reading to complete the two hour sessions.

Output result:

With the above mentioned strategy, we may conclude that a person may understand a language but, through lack of meaningful practice, speak that second language less than fluency…”We learn to speak a second language when given the opportunity to speak it.”

3) Gardner and Lambert originally considered that integrative motivation was more powerful in language learning than instrumental motivation.

In my opinion, I disagree on their consideration saying that integrative motivation is more powerful. Because, here in the Philippines learners most priority is get a job and sturdy future. And call center agent, English teacher and workers that could speak English well get the most chance of securing an opportunity either local or abroad; “Money makes the world go round”, now a days and not to find their roots or form friendship (as in integrative motivation).

“There are many factors to be taken into account when evaluating material for use with speakers of other languages. According to Nunan (1988): "materials are, in fact, an essential element within the curriculum, and do more than simply lubricate the wheels of learning. At their best they provide concrete models of desirable classroom practice, they act as curriculum models, and at their very best they fulfill a teacher development role. Good materials also provide models for teachers to follow in developing their own materials."

REACTION :

Yes, materials are essential element aside from the method of instructions in learning L2. That is why I’m not using English Textbook in teaching but rather I made or look for materials that will equal the learner needs based on their educational or professional background. Therefore, interviewing and knowing fully the learner is also indispensable.

I discover that using only English Textbook would not make a learner become conversant with the language. Which are unfortunately, most English students are learning only the formal English found in textbooks and schools. “The problem is- native speakers don't use that kind of English in most situations. When speaking to friends, family, or co-workers, native speakers use casual English that is full of idioms, phrasal verbs, and slang. To communicate with native speakers, a learner should not rely only on textbooks, but rather learn casual English according to A.J. Hoge. ”

This is also the main reason why I found out that ESP (which I’m using with my foreigner students ON LINE or one on one) is the most effective method to apply for adult learners of L2. And understanding the learners’ needs and goal would dictate what materials to prepare. ESP is designed to prepare students or working adults for the English used in specific disciplines, vocations, or professions to accomplish specific purposes. According to Hutchinson and Waters (1987, p. 19), “ESP is an approach to language teaching in which all decisions as to content and method are based on the learner’s reason for learning.”

LEARN ON LINE TO SPEAK ENGLISH FAST!

Due to some phony inquiries made by my competitors that I ‘m scrupulously dealing with real prospective clients only, and can’t just give answers in details without knowing a little background about the person inquiring or referrals from my foreigner (Korean, Japanese etc) students/friends.

But, to give you a little bird’s eye view… I’m not using General English in teaching (ESL, TESOL etc). I’m using a different method which I found out more effective specially in learning how to speak very well/fast English; based on my own experiences and research as I also learn different languages before (Japanese, Spanish, French, Korean and at the moment Mandarin). This is the reason why all of my students after they followed all my rules they learn very fast and get high score in English Exam (whatever exam it is) and they are referring their other family members and friends to study with me.
Answers to some inquiries:
*Requirement in studying with me ON LINE: just head set (with or without webcam) and SKYPE or YAHOO messenger. But, all of my ON LINE students are using Y.M. (They find it more simple and comfortable to use than SKYPE)
*Good internet connection as a vital tool for studying ON LINE.
*Students are studying with me from: LEVEL 1, LEVEL 2, LEVEL 3 (each level consist of 6-8 months and at least not less than 6 -8 hours per week for beginners LEVEL 1 …Survival English, American or British accent and intonation, stress, listening, reading and speaking, conversational English and English for Specific Purpose (depending on student’s educational background or career objective.)

WHAT A LOVELY ENGLISH
My dad always said to me, “you have to study hard about English"; but I didn’t. I didn’t know why I have to study about English. He said, "It will help you and if you can speak in English you can easily get a job". I just studied because I don’t want to hear his scolding. I also knew if I study hard English, it will help me, but there is a problem… That is… I don’t have an interest in English. My father always felt that I didn’t study well. Idon’t want him to know my feelings... that I didn’t like it. So, I started to study.

First, I just studied about TOEIC during 2months, but it didn’t help me because, I didn’t study hard andinterested in English. After 2 months. I changed class which offered listening skills. The class started at 7:40-8:30am. So I had to wake up before 1hour and a half. I don’t know how I could go to the academy during morning. After that, Irode a school-bus in front of the academy going to my university. I studied about listening skills while at schooling (6months). I watched drama and repeat listening to dialogues. Itreally helped me but, I couldn’t realize how much improved my listening skills are. And I still couldn’t speak with another person in English. I just repeated and listened. After 6months, I made progress for the next level. But when I took the next level class, it was so hard for me. I studied with real drama. I just wanted to quit... but I endured and kept going. Also from day one, my teacher regularly gave some paper to me. I had to make sentences. Through Korean sentences ...I had to translate Korean into English. It was so hard for me. I couldn’t make even easy sentence. I was so sad and I was depressed. My teacher picked me and asked some questions but I still couldn’t answer. I thought about English after each spelling project. I didn’t think English will help me and it was not important anymore. After that I didn’t want to go to the English academy. I also had many assignments during schooling, so everything was so hard. I didn’t want to study English but, after time past my friend and I promised we will take an exam for exchange student program. So at the end of December 2007, we took an exam for studying abroad. After that, I spent the time just forgetting about it all.

Time passed and it was already winter vacation- 2007. I worked in the hospital the entire day with my friend as partimer. I just spent the time evenly. My vacation was so boring. At the end of February, I received a call from someone…he said, he is the manager for the exchange student and asked me something. It was related to the exchange student. He said, “You can have a chance to go to the Philippines for studying next year - June.” I couldn’tbelieve that! How can I go to the Philippines for studying? I always hoped studying in a foreign country. I didn’texpect that. So my mother and father were surprised and couldn’t believe. As soon as hearing what he’s saying, Idecided to go to the Philippines. That night, my father congratulated me so much. Before, few years ago, I didn’t want to study English and interested. But I changed my mind about it… I studied again and had great concern with it. I went to the academy again until leaving Korea. But everyday I couldn’t go anywhere, because I had to study about my major in myuniversity at the same time. From after that call, I had a good time and then face to stand hard things.I passed the exam for studying in abroad but my friend didn’t pass. We took the exam together, but we couldn’t go abroad together. I was so sorry for her. But I couldn’t do anything. “I just said that I am sorry”. “If Iwere my friend, I would feel jealous”. But she didn’t… she really wanted me to study well in the Philippines. I was so appreciated for her kind heart.

The new semester (1st) started on March 2008. I met others who will go to the Philippines with me. There was a female and a male. We met almost 3times for the preparation going to the Philippines. We decided a date and booked ourair-ticket. Finally, we rode the airplane on June 4 and arrived in Philippines on June 5. When we arrived in there we just feltthe country is so hot and dark. After that, my new life started with English!!!The time already passed 5months and I changed a lot. I never thought that I can continuously write and speak inEnglish. I couldn’t make even an easy sentence before. I just thought English was so boring and bothersome. I am still astonished about myself now. In my first time, studying English, I had so much hardship and feel depressed many times. But now, I can say that …” English is the easiest language to speak and I made it”. I already made it but notthat hard at all because of my wonderful tutor. Hahahaha!!!I really appreciate my tutor here in the Philippines. I will not forget my life in here. What a lovely English… ㅡ and tutor!!!

TEACHER KIM
When I was young, my father always called me, “Teacher Kim”. At that time, I didn’t have an interest to become a teacher while; I thought I have to be a teacher someday. But after I took an education course in Hannam University and had teaching experience, I got interested in teaching profession and I feel happy.

I took educational course in Hannam University while I was taking both English and French subjects. For 4 years in my campus life, I had lot of experiences not only teaching but also other various jobs like selling things, counseling in a call service center and so on.
I believe, “Experience is the best teacher”. That is why I worked in different companies. Through this, I’ve learn many things for example, how to handle or treat others. I always enjoyed working. In addition, I sense a feeling of contentment when I’m teaching my students.
I had taught English in some English schools since I was in junior course, 3rd grade in Hannam. I volunteered to teach some old people English at night school. Moreover, since I took Education course, I had a chance to teach English in a public middle school where I used to go.

Two years ago, one of my dreams came true. And that is to go abroad as an exchange student and that is the Philippines. I took the most numbers of classes among other exchange students. Through this, I could make lots of friends and gain confidence to have conversation with them. Fortunately, I met a tutor, who taught me how to speak English without thinking grammar things. Thanks to her, I had a chance to teach some Filipino children English and Math.

With the above statement of T. Tagasaki, I do not believe in his opinion. Because, non-verbal (written) studies of grammar, writing, reading, and listening, all of these activities may increase recall memory for written examinations, but they have little benefit in teaching you to speak fluent English. "The best way to learn how to speak fluently is by speaking. (using ESP method which is what I'm applying to all my KOREAN students ). Without simultaneous involvement of all components of speech, (tongue, vocal cord, auditory system, brain and lungs) it is impossible to effectively retrain students' proprioceptive sense to accommodate a new language. Yet,this is exactly what ESL has traditionally done by introducing grammar, listening, writing, and reading as segregated activities. It is not surprising that it takes ESL students so long to learn to speak fluent English. This is according to the study of Lynn Lundquist. It is already observed that there are lots of students though they were able to get high score in TOIECand TOEFL and get perfect score in grammar but they cannot speak the language. I had a great advantage when growing up because my mother exposed me a lot in watching English movies and series, including English news. So, I was used to listening to correct English in addition to my favorite children show. And also through the help of reading aloud newspaper even though I did not understand it very much. That is why before I went to school I could already express myself in English though; I don’t have a formal studying in grammar ( morphology , syntax, phonetics, phonology, semantics and pragmatics) . And I was able to answer the grammar quizzes/ exercises and write a narrative because I already knew how to speak. My auditory system is already trained in listening correct English so I could immediately sense if it is right or wrong based on hearing it even uttering it inside my head. Certainly, I learned many important things about English through grammar study. But it was of importance to me only because I had already achieved basic English fluency. I did not learn to speak English as a result of English grammar lessons and writing. ( same with L. Lundquist)
Although, I’m not yet perfect…no one, however, is perfect. Native speakers make mistakes too; some even all the time. That is why I’m not focusing on the negative but rather on communication. My first goal in teaching is not for them to speak “perfectly”, the goal is to communicate ideas, information, and feelings in aclear and understandable way. Then, accuracy will automatically improve later over time of practice and studying.
